Films I love

My very special films I will post with picture and a write up.  The remainder that I like and have enjoyed very much but don't have that 'special' place, are in the separate film list.  If I had the time, I would do them more justice.

As a lover of films, I welcome any suggestions that either I have not yet seen, or forgotten to add.

Product DetailsShawshank Redemption
1994
Sent to prison for a crime he did not commit.  We are wholeheartedly on the side of our hero.  This film is nail biting stuff.  How does a good guy cope trapped amongst murderers etc when the ones in charge are baddies too?  In this film, they're worse than the criminals. Naturally there is lots of violence.  Despite having watched this numerous times, I totally suspend my disbelief and always watch it as if for the first time.  Great acting by everyone.

Hobson's Choice
1954  (Black & White)
A widower with 3 daughter's who likes his drink and his meals on time.  He refuses to pay the dowries his daughter's need to get married and declares that his oldest, Maggie, (at 30) is too old to marry. Maggie decides she'll prove him wrong.  She outwits him, not only does she marry his boot maker (John Mills) but also sets him up business in opposition to her father and also aids her sisters in the process. This is a great little film. I've never been to see the theatre production but would love to. It is amusing. The script is great.  Charles Laughton is putting his foot down...and he is made to pick it up!

Product DetailsRandom Harvest
1942 (Black & White)
A poignant love story that never fails to make me cry.  It does have a happy ending although still tinged with sadness. The hero has lost his memory and is in the local asylum. The heroine comes across him and looks after him, helps him regain his confidence. They marry. He gets knocked over while crossing the road and regains his past memory (before the war) but loses the years he has spent with our heroine.  A few years go by and she finds him but he is about to marry someone else...

Headhunters (based on Jo Nesbo's book)
2011 (Subtitles)
The hero, as well as finding the right person for the right job, is also a thief.  He steals in order to keep his wife in the lifestyle he feels she deserves; because he considers himself too short and fears losing her! This film is the type where if you have to go make a cuppa, you must put it on pause.  There are many twists and they're easily missed. This film is amazing and fun. So get plenty of popcorn, your favourite drink, switch off the phone and enjoy.

The Scent of Green Papaya
1993 (Subtitles)
Set in Vietnam in the 1950s.  I consider this to contain some of the most beautiful images I've ever seen.  It is a film with many layers and one watch will not be enough.  Thankfully it also has a happy ending...I love happy endings.

Coraline (based on Neil Gaiman's book)
2009
A friend got me this and I liked it so much I bought the book!  My daughters find it very unsettling.  In the film, a little girl (fairly independent and able to hold her own) walks through a secret door in their new home to find herself in an alternate life. Everything seems great at first....I can only say, what isn't there to like in this, so try it and see.

Avengers Assemble (Marvel)
2012
Great action, great gorgeous heroes, (Mark Ruffalo as Hulk is fantastic), great villains (I adore Loki). Great script and much more.  In case you haven't guessed it, I love this film.

Detachment
2011
Oh boy was this is a powerful film.  It is not for the faint of heart.  It looks at a side of life that is hard to understand.  There is a darkness, a sickness exposed in this that makes it difficult to watch and yet is mesmerising.  After watching, it makes one wonder why teachers continue to teach, how...but you must watch it for yourself.

Product DetailsThe Secret In Their Eyes
2009 (Subtitles)
Went to see this Spanish film locally a month ago.
A very thought provoking film about a criminal investigation as well as unrequited love.  When our hero retires he decides to write a novel based on a case that was never solved.  A good story always has twists and turns and a surprising ending.  This one doesn't fail. Plus it has a happy ending.

Product DetailsSholay
1975 (Subtitles)
This is an absolute must for me.  I first saw it at the cinema and cried buckets.  It's about two friends who are let out on parole.  Our hero-criminals are asked to deal with real criminals.  It's a bit like the Magnificent Seven.  There is the usual Indian mix of laughter romance, and music, love and sadness etc.  But in the right balance.  Which is why this film comes out of the cupboard every few years

Product DetailsThe English Patient
1996
To put it simply this is a love story about unrequited love during WWII.  Our hero is telling it in flashback from a hospital bed as other stories happen in the present.  It is a long film that needs more than one watching because your emotions get involved.
